Breeding

While breeding your mare you have some important questions to ask yourself. We know our breeding is important for our equestrian career but for what purpose will you use this foal?
- Does this mare have valuable genetic qualities to pass on?
- Is your breeding mare healthy and fertile?
- Is there a market where you can sell it if you don’t want it your whole life?
- Do you have enough experience to properly manage thru birth?
- Do you have enough experience to manage and train a young animal once it is born?
When you are deciding to breed your mare you need to find a perfect match. There is no way to say which stallion is a perfect match for your mare. When you know your mare and her characteristics you can add quality if choosing the stallion that has for example better technique, bigger gallop, better movement…
In this blog I want to represent you two of our most important breeding stallions:
First we will take a look at Fly High (For Pleasure x Landadel). His success in sport was going up to S*** classes. He also participated in „Six-bar“ competition, finished at a height of 2,15m.
He has more than 77 offsprings, 16 of them are highly successful in classes from S*-S**** one of them ridden by Simone Blum. (Flying Boy 20 v. Fly High-Sao Paulo-Argwohn-Aperitif (S****))
Next of our previously owned successful stallions is for sure Nikidam du Chateau (Quidam de Revel x Galoubet A). We have one of his offspring with which we still breed, that is a stallion No Name (Nikidam du Chateau x Condor). Nikidam was a successful in classes up to S*** and his offspring are following his footsteps.
Our breeding mares are all with a successful sport career behind them which they couldn’t continue for different reasons. Few of them are also young mares with good pedigree from which we would love to have foals from. Mares like this are first going to the stable to be ridden and then they return to the field for the next year and a half.
Where lives begin…
Before foal is born the most important thing to do is prepare a nice box with straw for your mare. You need to make the environment ready at least 14 days before her due date. Always make sure she has her peace and quiet. When you see the milk dripping you need to make sure you watch her closely until the birth starts. When you are not experienced make sure you have someone next to you who is or calls your vet. Preferably the one who knows the mare. After foal is born you let them for a few minutes and when he shows he wants to stand up you go and help and make sure he drinks the first sips of milk.
After a few days the foal is ready to go out. When you have a chance to keep your horses outside all the time is the best decision you can make. They can move how much they want and how they want. Body development is one of the most important things.
It’s also important for them to have a friend. When you have more foals and mares try to keep them together. After a minimum of 6 months the foal is ready to go away from the mother. Being in his same age group is important for this young star to develop social skills and enjoy the next few years as a herd animal like they originally are.
